Poet Penelope Scambly Schott

Serpent Love: A Mother-Daughter Epic

Saturday, June 17 , 2017

2:00 p.m.

Penelope Scambly Schott is a past recipient of the Oregon Book Award for Poetry. She and her husband live in Portland, Oregon, where they host a series of poetry readings called The White Dog Salon—although she and the actual white dog have an alternate life in which they spend part of each week in the small, wheat-growing town of Dufur where she teaches an annual poetry workshop.

Serpent LoveThe daughter’s husband throws her out. The mother finds her a place to live. And yet both mother and daughter end up feeling angry, hurt, and sad. Can writing heal the rift?

Schott's new book Serpent Love: A Mother-Daughter Epic contains poems of disappointment, fury, and always underlying love. The poems are followed by her daughter‘s vivid essay in response. Miraculously, the bare honesty of this book brings them closer together.
