Trail Tales
We've created a community picturebook trail at Big Creek Trail and from the Newport Library to Literacy Park.
The pages of the books--Walk on the Wild Side by Nicholas Oldland and The Bear Ate Your Sandwich by Julia Roach, are laminated for durability and weatherproofing, and mounted to posts. The posts are placed throughout the park for families to enjoy and for readers to share with others as they engage in a healthy walk. Reading with adults provides an opportunity for children to gain new vocabulary, learn new concepts, describe events and spend precious time together.
Grant funds from Yaquina Bay Optimists, the Newport Library Foundation, and the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund were used to purchase materials for three children's storybook walks. In keeping with our summer theme of health and fitness, we plan to install one story per month.
We have collaborated with the City of Newport Parks and Recreation Department and Lincoln County Parks to use their trails to post our story pages. Trail Tales are a new healthy alternative for reading and spending family time in nature simultaneously.
