Rise & Shine Yoga

Tuesdays & Thursdays    7:00 - 8:15 a.m.

Instructor: Sybil Merriman

 

This flowing Hatha yoga class emphasizes alignment and breathing techniques and is designed to wake up the body and greet the day.  It is suitable for all levels.  Postures will be tailored to individual needs.

 

Instructor Sybil Merriman has been interested in health and nutrition all her life.  She has been hooked on yoga since she took her first class in college.  Over the last 10 years, she has deepened her yoga practice with exceptional teachers and personal study.  Sybil completed a 200 hour teacher certification program at the Yandara Yoga Institute where she took courses in asana, pranayama, meditation, yogic philosophy and much more.  Sybil enjoys helping people heal themselves through yoga, using a patient and gentle approach.

 

Ballroom Dance

Tuesdays    7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Sessions:  Jan. 5 – 26 (Foxtrot, West Coast Swing, Rumba)

&  Feb. 9 - March 2 (Waltz, East Coast Swing, Cha Cha Cha)

$40.00/session or $15.00 drop in (no drop ins on last day of session)

Instructor:  Ella Kress

During these 4-week sessions, instructor Ella Kress will be assisted by husband Andy.  Ella and Andy come to us from Hot Springs, AR where Ella had been teaching and performing since 1976.  She has studied ballroom teacher instruction at Arthur Murray studios, Fred Astaire studios, and from private tutors in Kansas City, Austin, Denver, New York City, and Hot Springs, AR.  She has also taught at the Community College, YWCA, Quapaw Community Center, Coronado Center in Hot Springs Village, and Hot Springs and Belvedere Country Clubs.  Locally, she has taught Polka and judged three dance contests at the Lincoln City Oktoberfest, and at the Yachats Lions Club Oktoberfest she taught Polka and ran the dance contest.

 

These classes have a 10-student minimum so please register early.    

 

Argentine Tango

Thursdays    February 18 - March 11

Beginning Tango:  7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Tango 2:  8:00 -9:00 p.m.

Session price:  $40.00 or $12.00 drop in

Instructor: Rebecca Smith

 

Beginning Tango will introduce tango fundamentals for social dancing.  It is appropriate for absolute beginners and those looking to refresh their understanding of these esssential building blocks.  Tango 2 is for those with some tango experience.  This class will dive deeper into tango structure, music, technique, and  culture.

Rebecca Smith is coming to Newport from Portland to teach this class.  She began her relationship with Tango in 1999.  Her teaching has taken her throughout the United States and abroad.  Rebecca has been fortunate to work with many of North America’s dancers and has spent ample time in Argentina, resulting in a widely respected comprehension of Tango’s facets.  Rebecca has always believed in the emergence of personal expression within the form.  She offers her students a duel focus on technique and quality experience.  For more information or to contact Rebecca, go to http://eratango.com. 

Yoga Fusion

Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30- 6:45 p.m.

Instructor: Meira Dinsmore

Yoga Fusion is a class designed for all levels of yoga practice. Through simple strengthening postures and deep breathing exercises, this course will bring health and vitality to students mentally and physically. Those interested in a refreshing outlook on health and well-being in the new year are encouraged to drop in and check it out.

 

Instructor Meira Dinsmore began her yoga practice in 2001.  She has studied a variety of different forms, including Ashtanga, Hatha, Iyengar, and Pranayama. As a collegiate athlete, yoga aided Meira in maintaining physical strength, flexibility, balance, and avoiding injury.  Last July she travelled to India to strengthen her practice and undertook a month-long intensive Master 1 certification course. She has had a wealth of unique experiences practicing and learning a myriad of philosophies worldwide.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Tuesdays and Thursdays    6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Ages 13 - 70

$25.00/month or $5.00 drop in

Instructor:  Jonathan Sparks

 

Multiple martial arts (MMA), grappling techniques, submission holds, and more will be taught during this two-hour class.  Jonathan Sparks is a former student of the Gracie Family and a black belt of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  For more information go to www.jitsu.biz or call 351-8007.

That’s all it takes to maintain fitness!  Adults can sign up for our 10-week program and receive a free pedometer to track their progress.  Fitness Trainer Shannon Rackowski will give an introduction to “Walking for Fitness” on the first day and assist throughout the program.  Class is limited to 20 students.

Cardio Dance

Monday, Wednesday, Fridays   8:30 – 10:00 a.m.

Instructor:  Mary Solomonson

 

Cardio Dance is a fun, high-energy class geared toward the intermediate to advanced-level student.  Get the benefits of a great cardio workout while dancing to motivating, upbeat music.  If you love music and dance, this is the program for you!  Muscle conditioning and floor work are included.  Come and try out your first class free. 

 

 Power Sculpt

Tuesdays & Thursdays   12:00 – 12:50 p.m.

Saturdays  8:00 - 8:50 a.m.

Instructor:  Julia Clemons

 

This is a muscle-conditioning class that will incorporate the use of weights, bands, fitness balls, and pilates-based exercises to tone and sculpt your entire body.  This class is great for all levels.  We will incorporate moves to meet your individual fitness needs. Instructor Julia Clemons comes with 15 years experience.

  

Pilates Mat Class

Mondays & Wednesdays   5:30 – 6:30 p.m. & Fridays, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Instructor:  Rebecca Cheek 

 

Pilates is an exercise program that works the core muscles of the body (upper and lower back, abdominals and gluteus maximi) and can be modified for all bodies and abilities.  This class will increase your strength and flexibility, tone your major muscles, and even reduce or eliminate long-term aches such as lower back pain. 

Twister's Adult Stretching & Tumbling

Thursdays    6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Sessions:  Jan. 7-28, Feb. 4-25, Mar. 4-25

$35.00/session or $15 drop in

Instructor: Coach Cagle

This class is for adults that want to work on their flexibility and/or would like to learn tumbling skills.  This is a chance for parents to do something fun and be a kid for a while.  No skills are needed to do this class, and each student will learn and advance at their own pace.  Stretching as well as tumbling are great ways to stay healthy and have fun.

Coach Cagle has 17 years of experience teaching gymnastics.  She started taking gymnastics at the age of 12 and soon started coaching younger kids.  After her gym closed, she set up her own program through a private school and later was hired as a coach through Crook County Parks and Recreation where she coached for nine years until her family relocated to Newport this past spring.

Tai Chi/Qigong

Tuesdays & Thursdays   5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Instructors:  John Anderson and Roger Hart

 

This class is now ongoing and is open to new students all year round.  Tai Chi is excellent for balance, reducing stress, and for strengthening joints and immunity.  We have a short, medium, and long version, which means the learning curve is 1 - 6+ months.  Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) are relatively short ‘exercises,’ coordinating breathing with movement.  Once learned in short fashion they relax and energize.

Tae Kwon Do

Mondays & Wednesdays

Youth:  5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Adults:  6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Ages 7 and up    $30.00/month

Instructor:  Tim Anderson

 

Tae Kwon Do emphasizes self-control and self-discipline.  It is an excellent way to garner confidence and a positive self-image.  Students routinely excel in the classroom and extracurricular activities because they learn to focus their energy and center their minds.  If you are interested in the martial arts, you are encouraged to attend a class and meet with instructor Tim Anderson prior to registering for the class.

Aikido

Wednesdays   6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

$15/ month

 

Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art that focuses on conflict resolution.  Aikido is non-competitive and stresses blending with, rather than opposing the attacker’s energy.  This class is not an offensive art, it is a defensive art.  Learn how to protect yourself without hurting the other person.
