The Connection Hughes started playing for coach Pearls Southend Saints in his early teens. Hughes actually ended up playing on 4 different teams coached by Steve Pearl, including regional and all-star teams. Almost from the start Hughes began volunteering to help coach, starting with camps for elementary school kids when he was in his early teams, and moving up the age groups as his skills and confidence as a coach increased. In the summers when coach Hughes returned home from college he would assist coach Pearl with whatever coaching he was doing at the time. Including camps, youth all-all star teams and men’s teams. Now many years later, Coach Pearl is making the trip to help Coach Hughes with this summers basketball camps at the Newport Recreation Center. |
