Shops serve as the hub for equipment and crews that maintain vital city services. With equipment ranging from graders, excavators, and dump trucks to jetters and service vehicles, the Shops support Wastewater, Water, Streets and Storm, Facilities Maintenance, and Administration operations, ensuring efficient service delivery for the community.

The Vance Avery Wastewater Treatment Plant located in South Beach, built in 2002, treats an average of 712 million gallons annually using an Orbal activated sludge process with a design capacity of 15 million gallons per day. The facility produces clean effluent discharged offshore and produces Class A biosolids.

Newport’s Big Creek Water Treatment Facility,
built in 2012, produces an average of 760 million gallons annually, approximately 2 million gallons daily, utilizing advanced microfiltration, carbon treatment, and disinfection to feed 90 miles of water lines and six water storage tanks. Designed to expand from 8 to 10 million gallons per day, the plant ensures safe, reliable water for the community.

Operations

Streets and Stormwater

With over 55 miles of streets to maintain, including approximately 11 miles of unpaved roads, Newport’s Street and Stormwater Maintenance Division is kept busy year-round patching, grading, laying gravel, compacting, and otherwise repairing Newport’s vehicle transportation grid. Pedestrian safety is also a focus, and this division works to enhance and update crosswalks around the City. This division is also tasked with maintaining the city’s storm drain system. With our coastal weather and torrential downpours, the stormwater system can often see massive amounts of rainwater.

Wastewater Collection

The City of Newport’s Wastewater Collections division maintains 62.5 miles of gravity mains, 12 miles of force mains, and more than 20 pump stations. Crews perform routine cleaning, inspections, and repairs to keep the system functioning correctly, ensuring reliable service and protecting public health and the environment.

Water Distribution

Newport's Water Distribution division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of over 90 miles of water pipe and associated valves, six water booster stations, and six water storage tanks. Proactively addressing infrastructure is one of our highest priorities. Many Public Works projects involve replacing water distribution hardware with modern materials that can help prevent water main breaks and related disruptions to service. Although Newport is a city of 11,000, our water use is more in line with a population 2-3 times that, largely due to our tourism industry.
