Ban of Retail Fireworks
Due to elevated fire danger, the Newport City Council prohibits the use of retail fireworks within city limits during periods of high wildfire risk. This restriction typically applies from summer and into the fall, when drier and warmer conditions increase the likelihood of fires. The City Council adopted this restriction under Newport Municipal Code 8.20.020, which allows the city to limit the use of fireworks when weather conditions create a heightened fire hazard.
Retail fireworks include items that do not explode or fly into the air, such as cone fountains, cylindrical fountains, flitter sparklers, ground spinners, illuminating torches, and wheels. While these products may still be sold and purchased in Newport, residents and visitors are asked not to use them while the prohibition is in effect.
Additionally, Lincoln County also maintains a year-round ban on the use, sale, and possession of fireworks.
For those who want to enjoy fireworks safely, the City of Newport hosts a public Independence Day fireworks display each year over Yaquina Bay, with safety measures in place.
