Central Coast CERT Seeks Community Members for Free Emergency Response Training Program in March and April

The Central Coast Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is calling on local residents to strengthen community emergency preparedness by enrolling in its upcoming spring CERT training, a free eight-course program beginning in March. This program is sponsored by the Newport Fire Department.

From ice storms to heavy winds, Central Coast residents know how quickly emergencies can disrupt daily life - isolating neighborhoods, blocking roads, and overwhelming resources. In the aftermath of a major disaster, professional first responders may be stretched thin. When that happens, the most immediate help comes from those already on scene: neighbors helping neighbors.

CERT training equips community members to serve as the “eyes and ears” of emergency responders, providing critical information that helps emergency managers prioritize assistance where it is needed most. No prior experience or physical toughness is required. Whether your strengths are communication, organization, medical support, or logistics, CERT has a role for everyone, and your skills can make a real difference.

The free CERT course transforms concern for the community into practical, life-saving action. Participants receive hands-on instruction in essential emergency response skills, including personal preparedness, disaster medical operations (such as triage and basic first aid), utility controls, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, and an overview of CERT’s role in community safety and terrorism awareness.

Classes begin Monday evening, March 2, and continue on March 9, 16, and 30, and April 6, 13, 20, and 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. The course will conclude with a hands-on mock disaster drill on Monday, April 27.

Training will be held at Newport Fire Hall, 245 NW 10th Street, Newport, OR.

There is no cost to attend the CERT course other than time and commitment. To ensure all team members are fully prepared, attendance at all sessions is required. Class size is limited to 20 participants, and preregistration is required.
